Nearly 30 million open bank accounts were identified at the central bank accounts level at the end of 2020, an increase of 5.2% compared to 2019, according to Bank Al-Maghrib (BAM).
Nearly 1.9 million accounts have not been moved for at least a year, specifies BAM in its new dashboard (TdB) on “Statistics of bank accounts”.
Also, 0.3% of accounts (93,432) are denominated in foreign currencies, 82.5% of which are in euros, while 63% of accounts opened are checking accounts (18.9 million) and 30% are accounts in notebooks (9 million), says BAM. And to note that 2,059,303 new accounts were opened in 2020 after 2,671,160 accounts in 2019.
For people with bank accounts, BAM reports that nearly 17 million people have at least one bank account, as of 2020, up 4.5% from 2019.
As for people who opened an account for the first time, a total of 543,057 natural persons opened their first bank account in 2020 against 760,310 in 2019, notes BAM, specifying that 44% of them are women, 25% are elderly. between 21 and 25 years old, 15% between 19-20 years old and 13% between 26 and 30 years old.
And to continue that 95% are Moroccans residing in Morocco and 3.3% are Moroccans residing abroad.
