The Brazilian variant of the Coronavirus could easily become the majority by the summer in France. This is the warning formulated by the Scientific Council, set up to enlighten the French government in its management of the Covid-19 health crisis.
This scenario is described in the last opinion of the said council which underlines that “a risk of extension of the BR-P1 variant must be taken into account during the summer of 2021, if there is a decrease in the UK variant and a vaccination coverage with mRNA vaccines on the rise, but at a still insufficient level ”.
He is also worried about a mutation at a high level of transmission, but which we “do not yet know” if it is more lethal than the British variant. On the other hand, notes the Board, it decreases the effectiveness of messenger RNA vaccines currently authorized in France, in this case Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna.
The body, headed by immunologist Jean-François Delfraissy, however observes that “currently, no signal of a particular evolution of the BR-P1 variant has been observed to date” on the metropolitan territory.
According to the latest surveys, this variant represented only 0.3% of new infections at the end of March, unlike the British variant, which has become the majority for several months in France.
But faced with the spread of this virus in Brazil and its circulation which is growing strongly in Guyana, the Scientific Council called on the government to take new health measures both for this overseas territory and for mainland France. It is essentially a question of bringing the curfew forward from 7 p.m. to 5 p.m., of establishing containment on Sundays and of maintaining the suspension of flights with Brazil.
