Italian Ambassador killed in the DRC: the Rwandan Hutu rebels of the FDLR at the origin of the attack

The Rwandan Hutu rebels of the Democratic Liberation Forces of Rwanda (FDLR) are behind the attack that claimed the life of the Italian ambassador in Kinshasa on Monday, the Congolese interior ministry said .

“A convoy of the World Food Program (WFP) was the victim (Monday) of an armed attack by elements of the FDLR” targeting the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the ministry said in a statement.

Italian Ambassador Luca Attanasio, 43, was the victim of the convoy attack, as were his Italian bodyguard and a Congolese WFP driver.

Four people were also kidnapped during this attack, adds the same source, noting that one of these four people “has been found” by soldiers of the Congolese army “who continue to search” the area.

The Congolese government expressed its regret after this tragedy and assured “to spare no effort for the restoration of security” in this region “plagued by national and foreign armed groups”.

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned the attack, while calling on the DRC to “investigate diligently” into this criminal act.
