The president and four footballers of Palmas Fútbol y Regatas, a club in the Brazilian league’s fourth division, died on Sunday in a plane crash with the pilot of the plane.
“The passengers were going to the city of Goiânia (State of Goias) to play a match”, the club said in a statement, lamenting the crash, noting that there were no survivors among the six occupants of the plane.
The private plane chartered by the club crashed for reasons as yet unknown shortly after taking off from Porto Nacional, a municipality in the Amazon state of Tocantins, at around 8:15 a.m. local time (11:15 GMT).
The plane was completely destroyed after hitting the ground and exploding in a wooded area known as Luzimangues, a few meters from the runway of the Aéroclub Asociación Tocantinense de Aviación (ATA) in Porto Nacional.
According to the statement released by the club, in addition to the president, Lucas Meira, footballers Lucas Praxedes, Guilherme Noé, Ranule and Marcus Molinari also died in the accident. The pilot of the aircraft, identified only as Commander Wagner, also died.
“We regret to report that there are no survivors. In this time of pain and consternation, the club asks for prayers for loved ones, to whom it will offer the support they deserve ”, assured the club.
The Vila Nova club management also issued a statement saying they accept the postponement of the match and that they will pay tribute to the victims in their next match.
