Lionel Messi becomes second billionaire footballer

Lionel Messi is now a billionaire. The Argentine star tops Forbes’ rich list and becomes the second footballer to earn $ 1 billion in his career, after Cristiano Ronaldo.

Barcelona superstar Messi has caught up with longtime rival Cristiano Ronaldo and earned $ 1 billion pre-tax throughout his career.

According to Forbes reports, Lionel Messi is the most prolific footballer in 2020. The Argentine is expected to earn $ 126 million (€ 106 million) this year.

Messi’s career income for 2020 is split between his Barcelona salary of $ 92m (€ 78m) and an additional $ 34m (€ 28m) via endorsements.

In addition to Lionel Messi’s deal with Adidas, the 33-year-old is also sponsored by Pepsi and IA vision company OrCam Technologies.

Lionel Messi also managed to overtake Cristiano Ronaldo. Earlier this year, Forbes revealed that Cristiano Ronaldo became the first footballer to break the $ 1 billion mark thanks to his career earnings. However, it has been reported that Ronaldo, second on Fobes’ list, is on track to earn $ 117million (€ 98million) this year.

Ronaldo is the most followed athlete on Instagram and Twitter and also has sponsorship deals with Nike and Herbalife.

Third on the list is PSG superstar Neymar, who is expected to earn $ 96m (€ 80m) this year.

The Brazilian recently signed a lucrative deal with Puma after his contract with Nike ended. Neymar’s PSG teammate Kylian Mbappe took fourth on the list and is expected to earn $ 42million (€ 35million) this year.

Mohamed Salah of Liverpool came in fifth place. The Egyptian is expected to earn $ 37 million (31 million euros) this year thanks to his deals with Adidas and Vodafone Egypt. Paul Pogba, Antoine Griezmann, Gareth Bale, Robert Lewandowski and David de Gea make up the top 10.
